NBA ALL-STAR and Olympic basketball player Luol Deng visited a Brixton school to launch his basketball academy last week.
The Miami Heat star, who spent his teen years living in Brixton, set up the Luol Deng Academy at the Evelyn Grace secondary school on August 26 in response to government funding cuts.
The 29-year-old, who shot to the USA’s top basketball league after kicking off his career at Brixton Basketball Club, has started the academy to help turn talented kids into top British ballers.
As well as proving coaching and summer projects, the Deng Academy, in partnership with Nike, will give scholarships in American high schools to gifted young athletes.
A spokesman for the academy, said: “He genuinely wants to give something back to the community that helped launch his career,” he said.
“He wants to give kids the kind of support that he got and help them to find a pathway into the game.”
