Two children, a man and a woman fled their home in Hoadley Road after lightning struck the television aerial in stormy weather in the early hours of July 18.

The sleeping family awoke to a crash after the lightning bolt dislodged a brick which smashed through the conservatory.

After smelling smoke, the family left the house uninjured and alerted the fire brigade just after 2.30am.

The fire was brought under control by 31 fire fighters and officers at 04.30am. The entire roof and part of the first floor was damaged in the blaze.

Station Manager Darren Woodhams, who was at the scene said: “When we arrived the fire was creating a lot of smoke and we were concerned that the fire would spread to neighbouring properties but crews worked quickly to contain the blaze.”
