Shop local this Christmas: Lambeth and Southwark festivities

There’s plenty going on in Lambeth and Southwark as we count down to Christmas. The festive season is the perfect time to take advantage of the boroughs’ best artisan and bespoke goods, shop locally, and support our community. With an abundance of local artists, bakers and candlestick-makers, south of the river is the destination for shopping and festive activities. 

1 Santa maisie +

Santa Paws at Holly and Lil

The big man in red is visiting Bermondsey St’s one-stop shop for luxury dog collars and leather leads Holly and Lil this Christmas. It’s the perfect photo-opp for your pets to pose on Santa’s lap, whether they’ve been naughty or nice.

Santa will be at the shop, 103 Bermondsey St, SE1 3XB, on Friday 6 December from 6:30pm-8:30pm and Sunday 8 December at 12pm-3pm, and Saturday 21 December.

The rest of Bermondsey St is joining in the festive fun from December 6-8 with a number of the shops serving sherry and mince pies as well as a late night market.


Pullens bring all the boys to the Yard

Pullens Yards Open Studios’ Christmas Art Fair is a chance to nab one-of-a-kind Christmas gifts from boutique creative businesses.

Located round the back of Walworth police station, the handsome Victorian studios are home to artists, makers, fashion designers, ceramicists, jewellers, photographers, an events florist and more. They open the studios twice a year to display their wares, with prices at every level.

Don’t miss this vibrant community event!

The adjacent Electric Elephant Café serves steamy cappuccinos and lunchtime treats, and many of the studios offer mulled wine and nibbles. There’s also free workshops for kids and grown-ups.

Nativity festivity at Vauxhall City Farm

Vauxhall City Farm is celebrating Christmas with a family open day; their own family of rare breed sheep, ponies, goats, woolly alpacas and spotty pigs will all be out in force.

The day promises tasty festive treats, crafts, activities and a living Nativity stable-dress up where you can have your photograph taken! The event will run from 11-4pm and entry is free although donations are always welcome.

Vauxhall City Farm, 165 Tyers St, SE11 5HS, on Sunday 8 December, from 11am-4pm.


St John’s Christmas Fayre

Pop along to this traditional Christmas fayre where you will find stalls, games, and musical entertainment for young and old.

There will also be a Santa’s Grotto and Elves Workshop.

Fun will be provided by Dainty Sue, children’s entertainer, and music will be played live by Opal Flutes and a local brass band.

Those looking to fill their bellies can enjoy mulled wine and mince pies.

Goose Green Centre, East Dulwich, SE22 9AT, 11am to 3pm, November 30. Adm: £1, accompanied children free.


Scandinavian Christmas Market

This Christmas market returns, allowing people to browse offerings from Scandinavia.

Stalls will be offering gift ideas, decorations, food and drink from the northern European countries.

Albion Street, outside the Finnish and Norwegian Churches, Rotherhithe, SE16 4JB, Friday, November 22, 10.30am to 6pm, Saturday, November 23, 10am to 6pm, Sunday, November 24, 12pm to 6pm


Wanting More this Christmas?

Experience Christmas shopping by the river – and get the chance to meet Santa and his reindeer! The market will feature around 20 stalls – including many from south east London – every day.

Shoppers can enjoy food including jam, patisserie, Christmas puds and mince pies.

They can also buy gifts ranging from bamboo animals to beauty products.

Choirs – including the News’ own group, fundraising for Evelina Children’s Hospital (see page 20)   -will be singing carols, and a Salvation Army Band will be playing music.

Camberwell Artists’ Open House

Pick up some unique gifts made by twelve artists and designers.

Creations on sale include cards, upcycled earrings, ceramics, scarves, jewellery, knitwear and drawings. Tea, coffee and cakes will also be on sale, and kids can get their faces painted.
