Surprising sweetness on Clapham Road
The latest addition to Clapham’s thriving café scene, Dolcezza’s sleek interior belies its location on one of Lambeth’s busiest roads, in between Stockwell and Oval. Leaving the congested thoroughfare you are welcomed with the smell of freshly cooked bread (made in-house, along with the many pastries, cakes and cookies) and an airy space with exposed brick walls, stripped wooden flooring, dotted with simple armchairs and sleek wooden tables and chairs.
The food, displayed on a long counter in the centre of the cafe, changes daily but regular offerings include sandwiches, freshly made croissants and cakes, pizza slices, salads and a pasta dish. We tried the pasta with fresh red pesto and parmesan, and a Parma ham and mozzarella sandwich – both were fresh, filling, and at £4 and £3 respectively, more than reasonably priced.
We were told that the menu is yet to be fully developed, but that all dishes will cost between £3 and £4. For dessert we had a trio of the homemade pastries- chocolate profiterole, tiramisu and a mango tart, topped with blueberry, raspberry and dark chocolate- an unusual combination but it worked well. Dolcezza uses tasty Italian brand 7gr for their coffee, for which they are also a UK distributor. With its main road location, Dolcezza will not draw in a passing audience, but it’s worth making a detour into the smog to then reward yourself with a delicious sandwich and a homemade pastry.
