The ninth annual Clapham Street Party is set to be bigger than ever, proving once and for all that size really does matter!
From humble beginnings with just a tiny stage outside Kazbar and 20 metres of street space, the Clapham Street Party steadily gathered pace until its fifth year when it took over the street and “really went to town” says organiser and director of Kazbar, Craig Maritza – who created the event.
“Every year it’s been building, the first event was hilarious. I was DJ-ing in drag,” he laughs. “We’ve always had drag queens doing cabaret and there’ll be divas performing onstage and inside the bar but we’ve also upped the profile and are bringing in other special guests.” Among these special guests are cast members from ITV’s Loose Women, who will be hosting a charity auction at 7pm on the main stage with all proceedings going to gay men’s health charity GMFA and a yet to be determined Lambeth charity.
The event will be hosted by drag-queen and “whore of Hampstead Heath” Sandra, and there’ll also be live performances from Lonnie Gordon, Jaki Graham, Katherine Ellis, Jacquii Cann and Danny Hilton as well as the cabaret delights of Lola La Lasagne, Miss Jason and Maisie Trollette, Baga Chipz and Tanya Hyde, Crystal d’Canter and Kelly Mild, Myra Dubois, Son of a Tutu and many, many more. The mayor of Lambeth has also been invited so party-goers are instructed to be on their best behaviour… well, at least until the after-party. “For the saucy fellas Eagle in Vauxhall will be inviting you to their R18 evening which runs ‘til 4am,” Craig says, warning: “Remember, guys, this is a community event so keep your cheeks hidden until you get to 349 Kennington Lane.”
Last year’s event drew “very mixed” crowds of over 5000, Craig recalls, and this year’s is set to be another all-nighter. The outdoor event on Edgeley Road closes at 9.30pm but the party continues in local haunts Kazbar and The Two Brewers. Kazbar will be open until 3am with Sonique headlining the Kazbar DJ Team this year, supported by Paul Morrell, Pier Morrocco, Little Rob and the bar’s Saturday night resident Mark Norton. Diva Glendora will also be on-hand to entertain throughout the night.
This year due to the huge demand for space, Prescott Place (the road running down the side of The Two Brewers) will also be closed off for partying. The Two Brewers & in Prescott Place will be open until 6am where party-goers can rage until the sun comes up.
The Clapham Street Party will be on Edgeley Road and Prescott Place, SW4 7UL, on Saturday June 22 from 1:15pm until 9:30pm.
