Professional sportspeople and local names will tackle Streatham youths in a charity football match on Streatham Common next month to raise awareness of a planned boxing gym for young people.

Olympic Team GB boxer Thomas Stalker, ex World Boxing Union champion Wayne Alexander (pictured, centre right) and former Millwall player Mark Beard are amongst the players, with Lambeth Mayor Mark Bennett in goal and Match of the Day commentator Kevin Day as referee.

Streatham sales assistant and former boxer Darren Hill, 41, (pictured, centre) gave up his assistant manager job following the London riots two years ago to found the Lambeth Boxing Club, which will offer free boxing training but also access to a community employment scheme in partnership with local businesses.

He said: “My brother got me into boxing when I was younger and could have gone the wrong way. If it saved me it can save other people.”

Lambeth Council has promised to find him a premises, and he is applying for £10,000 from Olympic legacy fund Sport England.

To find out more or to play in the match, on June 15 from 1-3pm, email or visit Or go along and watch – it’s free!
