Film festival season is in full swing with the first ever Herne Hill Free Film Festival set to take place over the next two months.
The festival, funded by Film London, will see screenings at quirky outdoor Herne Hill venues including Station Square and Brockwell Lido.
Films confirmed so far include award-winning Japanese animation Spirited Away, Australian cult hit Muriel’s Wedding and Ang Lee’s Taiwanese family drama Eat Drink Man Woman.
There will also be a showing of silent classics Charlie Chaplin’s Easy Street and Buster Keaton’s Sherlock Junior at Station Square accompanied by live piano music.
In addition to the screenings, a ’48 Hour Film Competition’ will see people given a prop, a line of dialogue and a Herne Hill venue in which to create a short film of five minutes or less over the Bank Holiday weekend.
The completed films will then be screened on May 11, with prizes for the winners.
Charlotte Ashworth, one of the organisers of the event, said: “There’s obviously a local demand for it.
“Seven hundred people came to our screening of Buster Keaton’s The General at Station Square in September last year and lots of people said please do it again.
“It’s going to be great as long as the weather holds out and even if it doesn’t, people will still turn up with umbrellas!”
Festival organisers are still calling on volunteers to usher people in and out of Brockwell park and assist with the other screenings. Contact Charlotte on email@example.com or facebook Herne Hill Free Film Festival.
