Jazz lovers have more than one reason to celebrate at the Hideaway this month, writes Laura Burgoine…
If you can’t get to Vegas this Valentine’s Day, let Vegas come to you with the Jazz Club’s Rat Pack themed Valentines event, which will see the Streatham club transformed into Sin city’s Sands hotel circa 1950.
Silky smooth five-piece Jazzbomb, who have performed along the likes of Michael Buble, Jamie Cullum, Tony Bennett, and Paul McCartney, will take care of the music while guests can order dinner from a special three-course menu.
This leads into a two-night celebration for the Hideaway’s third birthday, where Basement Jaxx singer Brendan Reilly and vocalist Annabel Williams will join a live band fusing soul with jazz. LA-born, London based Brendan is a Hideaway favourite and performed at one of their first ever gigs with Redtenbacker Funkestra.
“The jazz scene in London is one of the best in the world; there’s a reason I’m here,” he says. “The Hideaway is really a gem. South London really needed a venue of that calibre and it has more than filled that gap”.
Off the back of a world tour with Brixton-based duo Basement Jaxx the third-generation jazz musician has gone back to his roots in releasing an EP Little Black Raincloud, which features songs he wrote and recorded with Redtenbacker Funkestra. “Jazz is what I studied and it’s in my blood; I’ve tried pop, R&B, soul but I realised I wanted to make an album of something that was closer to my heart”.
