The BFI Southbank will see in the Year of the Snake with three unconventional films exploring Chinese culture and presence in the UK, spanning the 19th century to present day. She, a Chinese, (February 9) paints a bold picture of a young woman’s journey from a remote Chinese village to London’s consumerist metropolis, while Po-Chih Leong’s film Ping Pong (February 11) uses mystic and surreal imagery to tell the story of a British-Chinese policeman’s difficult return to Hong Kong. The Opium War, a spectacular, probing account of the first Anglo-Chinese drug conflict (February 10) completes the season.
The Chinese New Year season will be at the BFI Southbank, Belvedere Road, SE1 8XT, from February 9 until February 11. Admission: £5.25 – £10.00. Free screening for over 60s for the Ping Pong matinee screening. Phone: 020 7633 0274, www.bfi.org.uk
